Prolight DJ is an easy-to-use software for controlling lights via DMX512. The project is freeware and can be used with appropriate hardware.

It should be understood as an alternative to a conventional light mixer. Furthermore, it also simplifies the work with the lighting equipment and enables fast operation.

Which file do I need?

Pro Light DJ exists in one line only, version 4. The author last updated it in March 2017. His site offers three files: the full installation, an update and the 3D preview as an add-on.

Magic 3D EasyViewAdd-on Anyone who wants to see the show on screen before setting up any fixtures. The 3D preview. It is no longer part of the Pro Light DJ download and has to be installed separately if needed. The author states no system requirements on his site.

What do I do with a .rar file?

The full installation and the update are RAR archives, i.e. packed folders. Since an update in autumn 2023, Windows 11 opens them itself with a double click. On Windows 10 and older you need an unpacking program, such as the free 7-Zip. Unpack first, then install.

Every button loads the file straight from the author’s server. Size, date and file name were verified on 12 October 2026; the date is that of the file on the server.

Why does my browser warn me?

The author’s site can only be reached over an unencrypted connection (http). Some browsers therefore ask before saving whether you want to keep the file. It still comes straight from the author; JMS Pro Light does not distribute it.

What Pro Light DJ is

Pro Light DJ is a free Windows program for lighting control via DMX512, written by D. Wegener (cool-dmx.de). In the author’s words it is meant to replace a conventional lighting desk and, above all, to be quick to operate.

The interface is modelled on a lighting desk: a fader for every channel, plus a BPM counter that triggers light changes in time with the music. The program is freeware and, according to the author, will stay that way.

What you need for it

A Windows computer, a DMX interface and a DMX cable to the first fixture. For the full installation and the update also a program that opens RAR archives — on Windows 11 it is already built in.

Together with our interfaces

According to the author, a driver for “Enttec OpenDMX” or compatible modules is built in. Our USB2DMX PRO and USB2DMX OPTO work this way.

The author does not mention Art-Net. He therefore describes no route for the AIR2DMX PRO, which receives Art-Net over Wi-Fi; for Pro Light DJ a USB2DMX is the matching interface.
