The PC_DIMMER system actually arose out of necessity. In order to light up the stage at events, the local clubs simply did not have the money. Thus, it had to be considered how the lighting could still be implemented in high quality.

Versions

Which version suits whom?

Today the manufacturer offers PC_DIMMER as one Windows version: 5.6.3 of 17 January 2025. There is no beta or test version. Until October 2026 the button on this page still pointed to version 5.5.3 from 2018 — it remains available here as well.

Version Who it is for What sets it apart Requirements
PC_DIMMER 5.6.317 January 2025Recommended Everyone starting today — from the club house with a few fixtures to the stage with several universes. The version the manufacturer offers for download today. No beta or test version is listed alongside it. Windows 10 or 11, 32 or 64 bit (manufacturer’s statement)
PC_DIMMER 5.5.330 August 2018 Anyone who would rather not touch a working 5.5.3 setup — or anyone for whom 5.6.3 does not run smoothly. The version this button pointed to until October 2026 (build 4726). The manufacturer’s download page no longer links to it, but the file is still on its server. The manufacturer states nothing separate for this version.

The short answer

  • Windows 10 or 11: PC_DIMMER 5.6.3.
  • A working 5.5.3 rig should stay as it is: PC_DIMMER 5.5.3.
  • Calling up scenes from your phone: the Android app as well — see the box below.

Is the Android app a lighting desk of its own?

No. According to the manufacturer, the app remote-controls the main PC_DIMMER application. After a one-time sync with the PC it calls up the PC’s scenes and control panels; the sync can be saved as a preset. You still need the program on the Windows computer.

More about PC_DIMMER

What PC_DIMMER is

PC_DIMMER is a free, open-source lighting control program for Windows. It was written by Christian Nöding (PHOENIXstudios Remsfeld); the source code is public on GitHub.

According to the manufacturer, PC_DIMMER drives up to 16 DMX universes, that is 8192 channels. The interface aims for a balance between an ordinary Windows program and specialised lighting software, so that beginners and professionals alike get along with it. Via Art-Net, PC_DIMMER connects to other programs and devices in both directions; extensions come as plugins.

What you need for it

A Windows computer, a DMX interface and a device description for every type of fixture — PC_DIMMER calls it a DDF. That is because you control the device through a graphical interface rather than the single DMX channel. If a DDF is missing, the program’s device editor builds one from channels, colours and gobos.

Together with our interfaces

The manufacturer’s interface list has a driver of its own for “JMS USB2DMX”: for the interfaces from JMS, identical in design to the Enttec OpenDMX, 512 output channels, status “stable”.

The AIR2DMX PRO receives Art-Net over Wi-Fi. According to the same list, PC_DIMMER’s Art-Net driver sends and receives 512 to 8192 channels, also rated “stable”.

Where to read on

This program comes from its respective manufacturer and is maintained and downloaded there. JMS Pro Light does not distribute it.
