What Lights Up! is
Lights Up! is a Windows program for running the lighting of plays and musicals. It was programmed by Terry Wells; the manual is by Jonathan Keren-Black. It is free, licensed under the GPL version 2 and has been on SourceForge since December 2005, where it has been downloaded 32,898 times to date.
It works like a simple theatre desk: you set a lighting state with the faders, store it as a cue and fade from cue to cue during the show — by hand or with a fixed time of up to 300 seconds. “DMX Freeze” lets you edit cues without changing the light on stage.
What you need for it
A Windows computer, a DMX interface with its driver and a DMX cable. The manual points out that many fixtures have 3-pin XLR sockets while the interface may be 5-pin — in that case you need an adapter.
Together with our interfaces
Lights Up! is written for the ENTTEC Open DMX USB: according to the author’s release notes, the driver file ftd2xx.dll in the package was taken from that interface’s driver package. USB2DMX PRO and USB2DMX OPTO run in other programs via the same Open DMX driver model — the DMXControl wiki lists them that way, for example.
The author does not mention Art-Net. For the AIR2DMX PRO, which receives DMX over Wi-Fi via Art-Net, Lights Up! is therefore not the right partner.
