Today's lighting systems offer great opportunities, but also require a powerful and intelligent control. Corresponding light panels are often priceless or not flexible enough to really exploit the potential of your system.
DMXControl allows you to utilize this potential without spending a lot of money. You can download and use the program completely free of charge . All you need is one of the many supported DMX interfaces, and you're ready to go!
So you are not forced to pay an expensive interface and thus the development of the software. DMXControl offers open interfaces, so that many people can participate in this freeware project.
DMXControl is available for download in two lines: the current line 3 and the old line 2 from 2014. There is no version 4 to this day — the latest release is DMXControl 3.3.3 of 29 September 2026. Which version is the right one depends almost entirely on the computer it has to run on.

Requirements (minimum)
DMXControl 3.3.329 September 2026Recommended
Everyone starting today — from the solo entertainer to the stage. Moving heads, LED fixtures, several universes.
The current line. Fixtures are programmed by their properties (colour, position, gobo) instead of by DMX channel values, and 16 universes are available right after the program starts.
Windows 10 or 11 (32 or 64 bit), Four cores from 3.1 GHz (Intel Core 8th gen / AMD Ryzen 2000), 4 GB of RAM, Graphics card with DirectX 10 and OpenGL 4.3
DMXControl 3.2.328 December 2021
Anyone continuing a project from this line — or anyone for whom 3.3.3 does not run smoothly on their own computer.
The previous version of the same line, still offered for download by the manufacturer. It works just like 3.3.3, only without the additions of the last few years.
The manufacturer no longer states separate system requirements for this version; its list applies from 3.3.2 onwards.
DMXControl 2.12.21 June 2014
Older computers that stayed on Windows 7 or 8, and small rigs of fixed fixtures. The older guides and videos match this version, too.
The long-established line, dated 1 June 2014 — no newer version has appeared since. It brings the effect sequencer, the beat tool and the audio player; it drives one DMX universe of 512 channels.
Windows 2000, XP SP3, Vista SP2, 7 SP1, 8 or 8.1, One core from 1.5 GHz (Pentium IV / Athlon XP), 500 MB of RAM, Graphics card with DirectX 9c
The short answer
New computer with Windows 10 or 11: DMXControl 3.3.3 — the current version.
Older computer up to Windows 8.1: DMXControl 2.12.2 — it also runs on weak hardware.
3.3.3 gives you trouble, or an old project has to live on: DMXControl 3.2.3.
Do I need a server for this?
No. DMXControl 3 consists of two parts: the kernel that drives the fixtures, and the interface you operate. On a laptop the two talk to each other inside that one machine — the manufacturer only asks that “at least the localhost” be present. A network only comes into play when the kernel and the interface are meant to run on different computers; for that the manufacturer recommends LAN rather than Wi-Fi. For a single laptop at the gig it is a non-issue.

Every button loads the file straight from the manufacturer’s server — no detour via their download page, no sign-up. Size, date and file name come from there and were verified on 11 October 2026.
DMXControl is a lighting control program for Windows that has been around since 2004 and is developed by the non-profit association DMXControl Projects e.V. The program costs nothing, it is not tied to one particular interface, and there is no licence locked to a dongle.
What a lighting desk has in buttons and wheels, the mouse does here — and in return you get things small desks lack: an effect sequencer, scenes on the timeline of a music file, sound to light and, in line 3, programming by fixture properties instead of channel values.
What you need for it
A Windows computer, a DMX interface and a DMX cable to the first fixture. Plus a device definition for every type of fixture — DMXControl calls it a DDF. For the common fixtures those definitions are in the association’s online library; if one is missing, the DDFCreator builds your own.
Together with our interfaces
The DMXC wiki lists USB2DMX PRO and USB2DMX OPTO among its supported interfaces — under DMXControl 2 via the output plugin “Enttec OpenDMX”, under DMXControl 3 via “Enttec Open DMX USB”, 512 channels out and in each (state of the list: 21 January 2026). The step-by-step setup under DMXControl 2 is further down under “Questions and answers”.
The AIR2DMX PRO speaks Art-Net over Wi-Fi. Both lines bring an Art-Net output plugin along: DMXControl 2 one universe, DMXControl 3 up to 16.
